Inflow and Infiltration

INFLOW & INFILTRATION FACT SHEET

I&I is defined as any storm water, surface water, ground water, roof runoff, subsurface drainage or any other type of discharge other than sanitary sewage and non-domestic waste. I&I increases the amount of flow entering the sewage treatment system, which in turn, increases cost of service. Treating excess flow due to storm water is not cost effective. It also challenges LCWSA to remain compliant with state and federal regulations required by the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972 and the General Pretreatment Regulations (40 CFR Part 403).

LCWSA’s Rules and Regulations address I & I concerns under Section 2.1.2 – Discharge Limitations, which states; “Any ground water, storm water, surface water and/or water from underground drainage fields which may originate from roof drains, cellar drains, residential floor drains, hydrants, etc. or any other source of infiltration and inflow is prohibited.”
